ISSUE CHARACTERIZATION

The character of an environmental issue determines how best to respond to a risk, and is determined by the outcome of the issue identification. This is shown in the following Figure.

The results from the Issue Identification process are placed next to one another to determine how best to respond to an environmental issue.

These ‘issue character flags’ have three components:

The left section
The middle section
The right section
Shows how significant the issue is from a scientific point of view.
Shows how important the issue is from a legislative/company standards point of view.
Provides an assessment of how concerned stakeholders are about the issue.

The issue shown in the theoretical example above, is of low significance from a scientific point of view, of high significance from a performance standard point of view and of moderate significance from a stakeholder point of view.
