RESOURCE USAGE
Various resources are used in the production of oil and gas. Fossil fuels are consumed by the generators and compressors on the platforms and by helicopters and supply vessels that service the offshore operations. Sea water is used for cooling purposes and for maintaining the pressure in oil reservoirs and for fire fighting. Chemicals are used to drill the wells, to protect plant and pipelines and to improve oil, gas, condensate and water separation. Construction materials, spare parts and paints are used for maintenance and for modifications. Food and potable water are used to feed offshore personnel and smaller quantities of other consumables are used for various support activities. Use is also made of the natural pressure and temperature of the oil and gas. Where possible, the gas pressure is used to transport the gas to shore and the oil is often warm when it surfaces, which helps in separating it from the water, i.e.: geothermal energy.
In addition to the use of materials, use is made of space. Offshore oil and gas production infrastructure has a defined footprint, which sometimes includes safety exclusion zones to protect platforms and subsea equipment, and helicopters and vessels travel along specific routes.
