RISK SOURCES

Environmental risk sources are the activities, processes and equipment that have the potential to cause, or contribute to, pollution. These pages provide a brief description of the environmental risk sources of the offshore oil and gas industry.

The activities carried out by offshore operators are primarily associated with the production of oil, gas and condensate from the offshore fields. Most offshore fields are in their operational phase, with design, construction and commissioning carried out earlier. Some offshore fields have already been decommissioned, but most still await this fait.

Most offshore operators also have an ongoing programme of development drilling. Secondary activities are the maintenance and operation of the offshore platform infrastructure and the running of onshore operational support services.

The scope of the offshore activities, the containment measures that are generally in place and the use of resources are described over a number of pages. Please use the links in the Figure to jump to the relevant text.

The descriptions on these pages are deliberately basic and detail is provided only where it helps to understand the environmental risk of an activity or how that risk is generally managed.
